OpenMarkdown vs iA Writer

iA Writer is a benchmark writing app — famous typography, a focus mode people love, and it's on every platform. OpenMarkdown isn't a writing app in that sense. It's built around a different moment: watching and co-editing the file your coding agent is working on.

Where iA Writer wins

Where OpenMarkdown is different

iA Writer is built for one person writing. OpenMarkdown is built for you and your agent sharing the file.

Its built-in MCP server lets Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or opencode open, reveal, read and write_section on the document you're watching, with section-level conflict protection so your unsaved edits survive. The preview re-renders and scrolls to each change the agent makes. iA Writer has no agent integration of this kind — and OpenMarkdown is free, with a Rust core that opens a window in well under a second. Different tools for different moments: iA for drafting prose, OpenMarkdown for watching a plan or spec fill in as your agent works.

When to pick iA Writer instead

Choose iA Writer if you want a focused, beautiful writing environment for your own prose — especially across Mac and mobile, with export and style tooling. Choose OpenMarkdown if the point is to watch and co-edit the .md your coding agent is working on, live (agent co-editing on macOS and Linux today; Windows coming soon).
